I don’t reside in Colorado, can I mail you my firearm for service?

Absolutely! Per the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE): “Any person may ship firearms directly to a licensee in any State, with no requirement for another licensee to ship the firearm.  However, handguns and other concealable firearms are not mailable through the United States Postal Service and must be shipped via private common or contract carrier (18 U.S.C. § 1715).  The USPS and private common or contract carriers may also have additional restrictions on firearms shipments by unlicensed persons.  Firearms shipped to FFLs for repair or any other lawful purpose may be returned to the person from whom received without transferring the firearm through an FFL in the recipient’s State of residence.  FFLs may also return a replacement firearm of the same kind and type to the person from whom received (18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(2)(A)).  An ATF Form 4473 is required for the return of the firearm, except in instances when a firearm is delivered to a licensee for the sole purpose of repair or customizing, and the same firearm or a replacement firearm is returned to the person from whom received (27 CFR § 478.124(a)).”

Do I need to undergo a background check to get my gun back?

No. 27 CFR § 478.124(a) provides that firearms delivered to a licensed gunsmith for the sole purpose of repair or customization can be returned to the person from whom received without the completion of an ATF Form 4473.

Can a friend or family member pick up my firearm for me when you’re done?

An ATF Form 4473 must be completed and a NICS background check must be conducted before we can relinquish the firearm to anyone other than the person who dropped it off. Background check costs are set by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and are currently set at $10.50.

What is your turnaround time?

We try to keep our turnaround times below three weeks, but sometimes we experience surges in requests, and some projects require a little more time to complete due to drying times or other time-sensitive procedures. If we believe your project may take us more than three weeks, we will notify you when you are dropping off your firearm. If a circumstance arises during the project that increases your turnaround time, we will contact you immediately and quote an updated completion date.

Do I have to pay you a deposit before you begin work?

Sovereign Armory will never require or accept a deposit before we begin working on your project.

Do you sell firearms?

To help us remain focused and committed to providing the best service possible, we currently do not sell firearms to the general public. However, if you would like to purchase a firearm, please see our sales page for additional information. We’d like to make sure you are taken care of even if we can’t help you directly.

I didn’t see a price for my project in your service catalog. Can you ______?

Our service catalog isn’t intended to be all-inclusive, otherwise we’d spend all of our time writing things down instead of working on your projects! If you have a project that isn’t specifically covered in our catalog, please contact us and we’ll generate a quote for you.

Can you work on my NFA items?

Yes we can! Per the BATFE: “a licensed gunsmith may receive a National Firearms Act firearm for the sole purpose of repair and subsequent return to its owner. It is suggested that the owner obtain permission from ATF for the transfer by submitting an ATF Form 5, Application for Tax Exempt Transfer and Registration of Firearm, to the NFA Branch and receive approval prior to the delivery. The gunsmith should do the same prior to returning the firearm.”

Will you convert my semi-automatic into an automatic?

Though we possess the knowledge and ability to convert firearms from semi-auto to automatic, Sovereign Armory cannot and will not perform any such conversions without all of the proper legal documentation verified by BATFE.

Can you convert my 80% receiver into a firearm?

If we were to complete your 80% receiver into a firearm, an entire slate of legal requirements are activated, including our obligation to engrave the firearm with manufacturer markings such as make, model, and serial number; and our obligation to report that manufacture to the BATFE. Once those legal requirements have been satisfied, we could only return your property to you after the completion of an ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background check. The single-greatest benefit that 80% receivers provide is the legal ownership of an unregistered, untraceable firearm. In order to maintain that benefit the firearm must be completed by the owner.
